Why receive massage during pregnancy?

Receiving pregnancy massage, especially weekly in the last trimester, is a real opportunity to prepare for your birth experience. Pregnancy massage provides a great and recommended resource to both prepare for birth and process the birth postnatal.

Many women stop having treatments during their pregnancy due to fears that it may ‘harm’ their baby. Massage, in fact, helps your breathing, circulation, and muscle tone and provides a sense of calm often like no other therapy – all completely beneficial to you and your baby! A monthly treatment from the early weeks through until your due date will promote a greater sense of well-being and help keep your immune system strong, your joints supported and give relief to common pregnancy ailments such as restless legs, lower back pain and tense neck and shoulders.

Benefits of Pregnancy Massage:

  • Reduces stress hormones and produces oxytocin which is essential for healthy pregnancy and easy delivery of your baby

  • Gives you physical and emotional well- being, protects from postnatal depression.

  • Better, more relaxed sleep

  • Headache and sinus congestion relief

  • Relieving tension from joints

  • Relief from muscle cramps, spasms, and pain in the lower back, neck, hips, and legs

  • Corrects postural dysfunctions

  • Increases in blood and lymph circulation, which can reduce swelling in hands and feet

  • Preparing the muscles used during childbirth

  • Healthy and nourished skin Protects against stretch marks, in postnatal massage can reduce any stretch marks after pregnancy

Postnatal massage

It is the best way to care for yourself and your baby after birth. As a new mum, you need to take care of yourself while caring for your newborn. For mothers who delivered naturally or without complications, they can start their postnatal massage as soon as they are comfortable and ready. For caesarean delivery, it is best to wait for at least 2 weeks after giving birth or when the incision is properly healed before starting postnatal massage sessions. Sessions are usually scheduled weekly for the first 12 weeks postpartum. It can be done with the presence of your baby on a wide massage table or a futon. You can nurse your baby during the massage, to enjoy the connection while being cared for at the same time.

Benefits of Postnatal Massage:

  • Supports healthy lactation

  • Mum and baby bonding

  • Relieves lower back, shoulders and neck pain from carrying and breastfeeding a baby.

  • Helps to eliminate excess body fluids and reduces fluid retention.

  • Helps in weight loss by giving a new tone to your muscles.

  • Helps you feel good about yourself. When you feel good about yourself, it is easier to meet the needs of your newborn.

  • needs of your newborn.

  • Helps to avoid postnatal depression

  • helps to restore the uterus to its original state

If you had a birth without complications, I recommend it to start as soon as you can. If you had a cesarean section it is best to wait 2 to 3 weeks or when you feel ready.
